"> OC3 circuits carry a bandwidth of 155.5 Mbps. OC3 is the equivalent of three OC1s; each OC1 carries 51.85 Mbps. OC3 is great for facilitating Voice over IP, hosting web sites for very large companies, streaming audio and/or video, or video conferencing. OC3 carries enough bandwidth to supply most internet service providers. It is available in most major US cities. If a company does not need full OC3, other options include: burstable OC3 (pay only for what you use but have access to full OC3 for peak usage periods), fractional OC3, or OC1.
OC3 is often far more bandwidth than most companies need. For maximum efficiency and reduced cost, other options include: T1 (1.54 Mbps), Fractional t1 (less than 1.54 Mbps), Integrated T1 (combination of voice and data), Bonded T1 (multiple T1 lines), bonded T3 (multiple T3 lines), T3 (45 Mbps), or integrated (channelized) T3. Each of the services listed above has unique advantages. Which product is best suited for your company depends on your bandwidth applications and projected usage patterns.  T3 or DS3?

Written by: Dennis Green - Jul 3, 2009

In the context of telecommunications, the terms T3 and DS3 are often used synonymously to describe a 45 mbps (megabits per second) circuit. A T3/DS3 is the equivalent of 28 T1s. People who are more technically inclined will often refer to DS3 when they are talking about the configuration of the circuit, and T3 if they are referring to the physical connection which carries the circuit. Most people, however, use both terms interchangeably. T3/DS3 is used for carrying both voice (in the form of data) and data traffic. T3/DS3 is commonly used for larger point-to-point circuits, MPLS (multiprotocol label switching), Virtual Private Networks (VPN), internet traffic, call centers, and videoconferencing.
